TRACK 1
Permed Hair
This cover reflects a time when my hair was damaged from constant perming and flat ironing.
Lyrics from Toni Braxton’s “Un-Break My Heart” express the emotional weight of this phase, with the purple background and visuals of breakage reflecting the sadness, frustration, and damage from constantly perming and flat-ironing my hair.
TRACK 2
Big Chop
Inspired by the lyric “I’m letting go,” this cover captures the bold decision to start fresh, using a brighter green to reflect growth and an afro silhouette to symbolize embracing my natural hair.
The soft green background reflects the hope and uncertainty I felt after doing the big chop, a bold decision to start over. Cutting off my damaged hair felt freeing but also scary, as natural hair, especially thicker textures, was still not widely embraced. The afro silhouette represents a fresh beginning, while lyrics from Nya’s “So Sick” echo the emotional release I had.
TRACK 3
Confused
The burnt orange background and uneven silhouette reflect the frustration and uncertainty I felt post–big chop as I struggled to navigate my hair journey.
The burnt orange background reflects the frustration and uncertainty I felt while trying to figure out my hair type and routine. After the big chop, I turned to YouTube for guidance but struggled to find anyone with hair like mine. The uneven afro shape mirrors the chaos I felt, and lyrics from Xscape’s “Who Can I Run To?” captured the overwhelm and doubt in this stage of my journey.
TRACK 4
Falling In Love
The pink background and soft expression reflect the joy and admiration I felt as I began to truly love my natural hair, with Ginuwine’s lyrics capturing that deep connection.
The soft pink background and fuller afro shape reflect the warmth and confidence I felt as I began falling in love with my natural hair, with Ginuwine’s lyrics capturing the deep appreciation and pride that emerged during this stage.
TRACK 5
Static
The static blue background and bold outline reflect a plateau in my hair journey, where stalled growth and split ends left me feeling frustrated and out of control
The static blue background and yellow outline reflect the frustration I felt during this plateau in my hair journey, when growth slowed, split ends became a concern, and I began to feel disconnected from my hair, echoed by TLC’s lyric, “I wanna have control.”
TRACK 6
Flourishing
The golden background and confident expression reflect a joyful growth and moisture retention in my hair journey, captured by Victoria Monét’s lyric, “I look fly, I look too good.”
The golden background and bold afro silhouette reflect the confidence and joy I feel in this current stage of my hair journey as my hair grows, retains moisture, and finally feels like mine, perfectly expressed through Victoria Monét’s empowering lyric, “I look fly, I look too good.”
